How long do dermal fillers last is one of the first questions patients ask at our Kitsilano clinic. The honest answer is that it depends on the product, the area, and your own body.
This guide explains what the evidence says and what changes the timeline. It also covers how we plan top ups so results stay natural.

Most fillers used today are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance your skin already contains. Your body breaks it down slowly over time.
Health Canada states that hyaluronic acid fillers can last from six months to a year or more. Results depend on the age of the skin, the size of the area, and the type of filler used.
That range is wide on purpose. Two people can have the same treatment and see different timelines.
Several things shape how long your results hold:
Because of these factors, we give you a personal estimate at your consultation rather than a single number.
Each area of the face behaves a little differently. Lips usually need a top up sooner, while deeper areas often hold their shape longer.
We cover each area in detail in our own guides:

At First Avenue Medical Spa, we use Revanesse hyaluronic acid fillers. Revanesse is made in Canada by Prollenium Medical Technologies.
Using a Canadian made product means we know where our filler comes from. Our dermal fillers in Vancouver guide explains the Revanesse range in more detail.
Filler fades gradually, so the change is usually subtle. You may notice:
A top up is usually smaller than the first treatment. Many patients find that regular, modest top ups look more natural than waiting until all the filler is gone.
How long dermal fillers last matters, but so does how they look along the way. Our goal is a refreshed look, not a changed face.
We book a follow up visit after your first treatment to check how the filler has settled. We also take photos, so we can compare over time and avoid adding more than you need.
In BC, dermal filler injections fall under the practice of medicine. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC warns that unlicensed providers may use unsafe or counterfeit products.
Health Canada has also seized unauthorised hyaluronic acid fillers from a spa in Ontario. It advises patients to ask to see product labels before any injection.
First Avenue Medical Spa is physician directed and has served Kitsilano and the West Side since 2008. If you ever have a reaction after treatment, you can also report it to Health Canada.

Usually, yes. Lips move constantly, so filler there tends to break down sooner than in deeper areas.
Many patients need smaller top ups over time. We assess you at each visit rather than following a fixed schedule.
Your face returns gradually to how it looked before. Hyaluronic acid breaks down naturally, so there is no sudden change.
