It is the first question at nearly every consultation: how many laser hair removal sessions will this really take? The honest answer is a range rather than a fixed number, and understanding why helps you plan properly instead of feeling misled halfway through.
Hair grows in cycles, and laser treatment only affects follicles that are actively growing at the moment of treatment. At any given time, a meaningful portion of your follicles are dormant and effectively invisible to the laser.
According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, laser hair removal requires multiple sessions spaced weeks apart specifically to catch follicles as they rotate into their active growth phase.
This is also why sessions cannot simply be booked closer together to finish faster. The spacing is dictated by your biology, not by clinic scheduling.
Most people need roughly 6 to 8 sessions for significant long-term reduction, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. Some areas resolve faster, some need more.
Anyone promising a fixed number before assessing your hair and skin is guessing. The range exists because the variables genuinely differ between people.
Several factors shift where you land in that range:
That last point is worth being upfront about. If your hair growth pattern is still changing, no honest practitioner can quote you a tidy session count.
Not all laser hair removal is the same technology. Single wavelength systems using only an Alexandrite laser target melanin efficiently, but are not suitable for tanned or darker skin tones.
At First Ave we use the GentleMax Pro, which combines Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths in one platform. The Nd:YAG wavelength is appropriate for a broader range of skin tones, which means your treatment plan is built around your skin rather than around a single machine’s limitations.
If you have been told elsewhere that you are not a candidate, that may have been a device limitation rather than a statement about your suitability for laser hair removal generally.
Most clients maintain results with occasional touch-up sessions once or twice a year. Some regrowth over time is normal and expected, and it does not mean the initial series failed.
We would rather set that expectation now than have you feel misled in year two.
Your consultation covers skin tone, hair colour and coarseness, the specific treatment area, and any hormonal factors relevant to your situation. From there we give you a realistic answer on how many laser hair removal sessions your plan will likely involve, and explain the reasoning, alongside aftercare guidance that helps your results hold.
Worth knowing: laser hair removal is not a regulated procedure in British Columbia, meaning practitioner training varies widely between providers. The Canadian Skin Patient Alliance encourages asking directly about a practitioner’s credentials and device training before booking any laser treatment.
First Ave Medical Spa has served Kitsilano and the wider Vancouver area since 2008. Every laser hair removal plan is physician directed, following standards set by the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons, for clients across Kitsilano, Fairview, Mount Pleasant, Point Grey, and Kerrisdale.
How many laser hair removal sessions until I see any difference? Many clients notice some reduction after the first few sessions, though meaningful long-term reduction builds across the full series.
Can laser hair removal be permanent? Most people experience significant long-lasting reduction rather than complete permanent removal, with occasional maintenance sessions over time. Our guide to whether laser hair removal is permanent covers this in more depth.
What if I miss a session? Spacing sessions too far apart can extend your overall timeline, since follicles may cycle out of the treatable phase. Staying close to schedule keeps things efficient.
Does hair colour change how many sessions I need? Yes. Darker, coarser hair responds more efficiently. Fine, light, grey, or white hair may need more sessions or a different approach entirely.
Can I speed up the process? No. The interval is set by your hair’s growth cycle, and treating sooner simply means treating follicles that are not yet susceptible.
